 About Us

  • Welcome to BOI Magazine. BOI is a free magazine, established in January of 2000; we are distributed in bulk in the greater Chicago area. We offer a platform for writers, artists and advertisers to expand the community consciousness in the ever-changing gay culture. It's no secret that the gay/lesbian community has more spending power than other target groups, but they must know where to spend. We are the pipeline to that community, of professional gay and lesbians that follow a structured lifestyle. Past issues of BOI have directed our readers to local restaurants, retail businesses as well as vacation spots and circuit events and other venues all across the nation.

Publisher, Mike Macharello:

Sales and Office Manager, Freddie Bain

  • Freddie is the office manager and sales manger. His job isn't an easy one by any means. Keeping the advertisers and the staff happy and the office running smoothly is a major feat. Freddie has been with BOI since 2002 and is still going strong. Along with his responsibilities at BOI Freddie is an artist designing hats and accessories under Freddie B Designs and is a prominent Chicago DJ.

Web and Graphic Design, JR Garcia

  • JR has been with BOI Magazine for almost 4 years as the main Graphic Designer. In the past 3 years he has developed the magazine on line and is building a more functional and interactive website for the New BOI Magazine online. Prior to working at BOI, JR was a manager at Circuit Nightclub since it's opening in 1995. His talent and creativity keep the magazine fresh and ever changing.

Distribution Coordinator, Jorge Hernandez

Contributing Writers

Lee Gerstein

  • Lee has been with BOI since day 1 (he can't remember how long that is).  He writes theatre and movie reviews, and sometimes writes for Time Out, The Chicago reader, and other publications.  He has been a guest on NPR's Odyssey, almost 20 times to discuss movies. Lee was also LesbigayRadio's film reviewer for several years, and has appeared on Chicago Tonight to discuss film.  He loves the way opening the magazine is like taking a walk in Boystown, even if you're far away.

DJ Plez

  • DJ Plez is BOI Magazine's Music Editor. He's been writing his Groove Line column for BOI since 2004, covering Chicago's dance music and club scenes as well as reviewing music of note and interest to the BOI readership. He also pens an occasional feature article or interview. In addition to his hard copy presence in BOI, DJ Plez has a significant internet existence as the Music Editor of ChicagoPride.com, the Windy City's leading lifestyle web site geared toward the LGBT community.  A true house-head, DJ Plez has been DJing for 20 years and currently holds residencies in Chicago at Cocktail and Cesar's and in Milwaukee at PUMP! He also is host of the popular Sunday night internet radio mix show, Groove Line, on Fusion Radio Chicago (www.fusionchicago.com).

Jon Erickson

  • Jon began writing for BOI Magazine in the spring of 2003, right around the time he started Erickson & Oppenhiemer.  Jon saw a need for legal representation for the LGBT community by someone that understood some of the unique needs of the community.  BOI provided him with the opportunity to speak directly to their readers in a hopefully, not-so-stuffy-legal kind of way.  Jon says it is always great to meet someone who reads the column.  At Erickson & Oppenheimer, Jon specializes in criminal defense and police mis-conduct cases and can be reached at ericksonandoppenheimer.com or 773-875-4646.

John Polly

  • A NYC-based freelance journalist whose work has been featured on Logo, as well as in GENRE, Next Magazine, Attitude and other gay publications all over the place. He even writes for non-gay magazines occasionally, too.
